Pilates is defined generically as a system of exercises using special apparatus (equipment) designed to improve physical strength, flexibility and posture to enhance mental awareness.

I believe Pilates is something everyone can and should do, but, after all, I am a Pilates junkie and teacher. I do not know of a better way in my own experience with injury, recovery and overall maintenance that can adapt to provide gentle strength training for students like "I am just really out of shape" or need help with rehabilitation movement all the way to strenuous versatile challenges for even skilled athletes to gain muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, improve posture and balance, abdominal and lumbo-pelvic stability and muscular activity. All skills I can walk out of the studio with proprioceptive knowledge gained and use in everyday life if I so choose, its truly an amazing functional movement therapy.
Like any other exercise program, it is one part of "your soup", the choices you make or not to improve your overall health and movement program. it works best when done regularly. and I highly recommend doing some decent ground work with private Pilates sessions before doing group or mat Pilates classes. My studio is set up preferably for Private sessions with the capacity to see Duets. I have a Full Studio, minus a few pieces of apparatus I have yet to see or use myself as a Pilates student and teacher.
